Darin Peets & Service Dog Rex
When Darin was 17 years old, his life changed when he broke his neck in a diving accident.
Puppy raiser Erin Boetzer began volunteering for Canine Companions differently than most.
Founded in 1975, Canine Companions for Independence® is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.
The assistance dogs we breed, raise and train aren’t just the ears, hands and legs of their human partners. They’re also goodwill ambassadors and often, their best friends. They open up new opportunities and new possibilities, and spread incredible joy. We unite people with dogs in a powerful program that leads to greater independence and confidence.

When Darin was 17 years old, his life changed when he broke his neck in a diving accident. Darin recalls his perspective post-injury: “Life’s not over. You’re still here for a purpose.” Darin finished college, married the love of his life, Lorena, and began a family in Sacramento.
Darin was matched with his first Canine Companions service dog, Robis, in 2007. Robis served as Darin’s loving service dog for nearly a decade: at home, in public and at work in Darin’s kindergarten classroom. After Robis retired, Darin came back to Canine Companions to be matched with his new service dog, Rex, in November of 2016.
Rex picked up right where Robis left off - opening and closing doors, picking up dropped items and pulling Darin in his manual wheelchair. Rex is also a big hit with Darin’s students, who enjoy reading to him and interacting with him when he’s not assisting Darin. At home, Rex also provides comfort and companionship to Darin’s son, who has special needs. Darin says, “Now that I see all the things that a dog can do for you, not only physically but also emotionally, I can’t see my life without a dog.”
