Description

Exceptional Dogs for Exceptional People®

Founded in 1975, Canine Companions for Independence® is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Dominic Prado with Service Dog Tami will be speaking to attendees at Sit Stay Sparkle and sharing his experience.

Dominic’s Story

In 2012, when now 25-year-old Dominic Prado was in college, he broke his neck in a snowboarding accident and college life was suddenly put on hold. After taking time off to rehabilitate, Dominic eased his way back into college, taking online classes. Now a wheelchair user, Dominic decided to apply for a service dog from Canine Companions. He was invited to receive his dog, Tami, just two weeks before he went back to school full-time in the fall of 2014.

He and Tami moved into a dormitory at San Jose State University and took on college life together. Dominic explains, “With Tami, I have the confidence to go anywhere knowing she will be there to help me.” Tami helps Dominic by retrieving dropped items, carrying items and pulling Dominic in his wheelchair. She also serves as a social bridge between Dominic and other people in the community. In the spring of 2016, Dominic (and Tami) graduated from San Jose State University.

Now, Dominic is a full-time student getting his master’s degree in business administration at San Jose State University and works part-time at a tech company in the Bay Area. His busy life includes school, work, regularly exercising at a rehabilitation gym and maintaining a social life. Tami is thrilled to be a part of this active lifestyle. Dominic will graduate with his master’s degree in business administration in the spring of 2018, again with Tami by his side. Dominic explains, “Tami works hard and plays hard, and that’s how I live my life. She’s my perfect match.”
